Lights and signals

Every light is checked by eye; a light meter measures the headlight and its aim on low beam.

Light switches work

The handlebar switches turn the lights on and change between low and high beam.

With the engine running, try every position of the switch and watch the light change.

Headlight bright on both beams
Type A: one fails the test

Headlight bright on both beams

Low and high beam both light up brightly. The centre measures at least 2.5 klux at 1 m (or 4 lux at 25 m) with the engine revved.

At dusk, shine it on a wall. A dim yellow beam that brightens a lot when you rev points to a weak bulb, battery or charging.

Low beam aimed slightly down
Type A: one fails the test

Low beam aimed slightly down

On low beam the light points down by 0.5 to 3.5 % (0.5 to 3.5 cm for every metre).

Park on level ground 5 m from a wall, rider seated. The brightest part of the low beam should fall 2.5 to 17.5 cm below the height of the headlight centre.

All four turn signals
Type A: one fails the test

All four turn signals

Front and rear turn signals flash on both sides, with lenses complete and firmly fixed.

Switch left, then right, and walk round the motorcycle. Very fast flashing usually means a blown bulb.

Brake light from lever and pedal
Type A: one fails the test

Brake light from lever and pedal

The brake light comes on with the front lever and with the rear pedal, and its lens is complete.

Ask someone to watch from behind, or look at the reflection on a wall, while you use each brake in turn.

Right colours, none missing
Type A: one fails the test

Right colours, none missing

White or yellow light at the front, red tail and brake light, amber turn signals, and no light missing.

Look at each light switched on. Add-on lamps in other colours (blue, green) can count as a wrong colour. The small white light on the plate is normal.
