The gas test
The centre measures carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC) with the engine warm and idling. Going over the limit is a type A defect.

Before the test
A home check cannot measure gases. Steady idle and no blue or black smoke are good signs; a tune-up before the test helps a motorcycle near the limit.
Ride for ten minutes before you arrive so the engine is at its normal temperature, as the test requires.
