Exhaust, noise and horn

The exhaust and silencer, the gas test at idle and the horn.

Exhaust, noise and horn

4 items: 4 type A (one fails the test).

Exhaust whole and attached
Type A: one fails the test

Exhaust whole and attached

The exhaust has no breaks, holes or loose joints and is fully fitted. A small hole that is part of the design is fine.

With the engine running, listen and feel (carefully) for puffs at the joints and look under the motorcycle.

Silencer, no noise devices
Type A: one fails the test

Silencer, no noise devices

The silencer is fitted and sounds normal; no straight-through pipe, whistle or device made to make noise.

The check is by ear: an exhaust that is clearly louder than standard is a fault.

Clean exhaust gas
Type A: one fails the test

Clean exhaust gas

Warm engine at idle: no blue or black smoke, and the engine idles steadily. The centre measures CO and HC at idle.

Ride for ten minutes, then let it idle. Blue smoke means burning oil; black smoke a rich mixture. A 2-stroke shows a little light smoke. The limits for your engine are on The inspection.
