Brakes

Levers, cables, hoses and the pump are checked by eye; rollers measure how hard the motorcycle brakes.

Brakes

10 items: 9 type A (one fails the test), 1 type B (five fail the test).

Lever and pedal travel
Type A: one fails the test

Lever and pedal travel

The front lever and the rear pedal feel firm: they do not touch the grip or the footrest and are not too stiff.

Squeeze the lever and press the pedal hard. Too much travel usually means worn pads or shoes or a loose adjustment.

  • Brake adjustment: $ 10.000
  • Front brake pads or shoes: $ 32.000
  • Rear brake shoes or pads: $ 37.000
Lever and pedal spring back
Type A: one fails the test

Lever and pedal spring back

When you let go, the lever and the pedal return fully and quickly by themselves.

Use each brake and release it. A slow or sticking return points to a dry cable, a weak spring or a sticking pivot.

Front brake stops the wheel
Type A: one fails the test

Front brake stops the wheel

The front brake on its own stops the front wheel. On the rollers the motorcycle must reach at least 30 % braking efficiency.

Push the motorcycle forward with only the front brake on: the wheel should stop at once. Look at the pad thickness, or the wear arrow on a drum.

Rear brake stops the wheel
Type A: one fails the test

Rear brake stops the wheel

The rear brake on its own stops the rear wheel. A wheel with no brake at all fails the test.

Push the motorcycle with only the rear pedal pressed: the wheel should stop at once. On a drum, the wear arrow must stay inside its mark.

Brake cable or rod
Type A: one fails the test

Brake cable or rod

Cables, their sheaths or the rod are not frayed, kinked or rusty and do not catch on other parts.

Follow the cable from the lever or pedal to the drum while you turn the handlebar from side to side.

Applies only with a drum brake.

Brake pump (master cylinder)
Type A: one fails the test

Brake pump (master cylinder)

The brake pump on the handlebar (and by the pedal if it has one) is not leaking, cracked or loose.

Look for wet fluid or stains under the pump and wiggle it gently.

Applies only with a disc brake.

Reservoir cap in place
Type A: one fails the test

Reservoir cap in place

The brake fluid reservoir has its cap and all its screws.

Look at the small reservoir on the handlebar or by the pedal.

Applies only with a disc brake.

Brake fluid level
Type B: five fail the test

Brake fluid level

The fluid level is between the MIN and MAX marks.

With the motorcycle upright and the handlebar straight, look through the reservoir window. Dark fluid is due for a change.

Applies only with a disc brake.

Hoses and joints
Type A: one fails the test

Hoses and joints

No fluid leaks at the hoses or their joints; hoses are not cracked, swollen, crushed or rubbing.

Follow each hose from the pump to the caliper and feel the joints for wetness.

Applies only with a disc brake.

Caliper
Type A: one fails the test

Caliper

The brake caliper is not leaking and has all of its bolts.

Look at the caliper on the disc for wet fluid and count its bolts.

Applies only with a disc brake.
